For someone whose career is dedicated to the end of life, Lydia Gastroph is almost exuberantly lively. In the first five minutes of the meeting she quickly dashed across the street to get coffee and told two jokes, one about the Greeks’ notorious tardiness (“If you’re invited to dinner at nine o’clock and come at ten, the housewife leaves just for shopping”) and one about sociologists. And now he sits there, wearing a trouser suit in a strong blue and red pattern, and plunges into the conversation without any reservations or forethought.
