Munich: Dominik Graf presents his new film essay – Munich

Gottfried Benn, Erich Kästner, Ina Seidel and Hans Fallada – all writers who did not leave Germany despite the strictest censorship under National Socialism. Born in Munich in 1952, director Dominik Graf (“Fabian oder Der Gang vor die Hunde”) is dedicated to these authors who have stayed in Germany in his film “Everyone Writes for Himself”.

Four days before the official theatrical release on August 24, the work will be screened once in the Monopol cinema. After the 169-minute performance, there will be an audience discussion with Graf.

The documentary essay film, which is based on the book of the same name by Anatol Regnier (“We Afterborn”, “Frank Wedekind”), leads from the Weimar Republic right into the middle of the dictatorship of National Socialism. Regnier takes the viewer to significant places, through the biographies, writings and archives of Kästner, Benn, Fallada and others. An essay that seeks answers to questions about the attitude of the remaining writers towards the Nazi regime and also addresses authors in exile, such as Brecht, Mann or Feuchtwanger.

“Everyone writes for themselves”, directors: Dominik Graf and Felix von Boehm, preview & audience discussion, Sun., Aug. 20, 2.30 p.m., Monopol-Kino, Schleißheimer Straße 127, information and tickets at www.monopol-kino.de
