Munich: City asks for donations in kind for refugees – Munich

The number of refugees arriving from the Ukraine at Munich Central Station is steadily increasing. According to the city, several thousand are expected again in the next few days – but due to delivery bottlenecks, not all the necessary items can be procured at the moment. The city has now launched an appeal for donations.

According to the city, the following items are required: sheets, blankets, sleeping bags, pillows, towels, sanitary napkins, tampons, toothbrushes, toothpaste, shower gel, shampoo, deodorant, disinfectant spray and hand disinfectant, disposable gloves, baby diapers of all sizes, baby food and baby bottles, pacifiers and pacifiers pet food.

  • Where can donations be dropped off:

The listed donations in kind can be handed in daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Small Olympic Hall in the Olympic Park, Spiridon-Louis-Ring 21, starting today and until further notice.

  • How the bottlenecks arose:

The spokeswoman for the city’s coordinating staff office speaks of “bottlenecks due to the dynamic arrival events” at the weekend, in other words: In the emergency shelters for the refugees arriving from Ukraine, there was a considerable lack of hygiene articles, diapers and basic equipment, among other things. There were delivery bottlenecks, “the warehouses are empty”.

A call for help went out to the Heimatstern association, which organizes aid projects in Ukraine and was somewhat annoyed with the “city’s coordination of the matter,” as Tilman Haerdle from Heimatstern reports: That’s why they had vans already packed for Ukraine 30 crates of material were unloaded quickly and delivered to Munich. All Saturday they drove to the discounters in the city and district for basic supplies, but then often stood in front of empty shelves. “Volunteers have been buying exactly that like the world champions for two weeks now. We are now trying to regulate the situation as constructively as possible.”

This Monday, the spokeswoman for the city’s staff announced, they will meet with the aid organizations that collect donations in kind in order to “coordinate this together”.
