Munich: careful cleaning of the Sollner pond – Munich

The Sollner Weiher is a popular destination for walkers from the south of Munich. In the harsher winters, it used to be a magnet for ice stockists and ice skaters. Less well known is the importance of the small body of water for species protection. Occurrences of the pond mussel and the bitterling, a two to nine centimeter large, extremely rare carp fish, attract the attention of official and volunteer conservationists alike.

A new biotope protection concept based on an expert report applies to the pond with immediate effect. Accordingly, its cleaning, which is necessary from time to time due to heavy algae growth, should only be carried out “carefully”, regularly and in sections. In the past, the pond was simply pumped out by the volunteer fire brigade for such rehabilitation purposes. A favor that district committee member Reinhold Wirthl (CSU) has been trying to get for years.

A sign by the fountain at the pond should also serve to improve the condition of the biotope, pointing out that ducks and fish should not be fed. For Inga Meincke (Greens) from the Thalkirchen-Obersendling-Forstenried-Fürstenried-Solln district committee, the new requirements for water maintenance are “good news”. Because they would meet the goal of “keeping the Sollner Weiher cleaner and more beautiful in the long term”. The district committee followed this point of view and voted unanimously for the new care concept.
