Munich: bollards instead of barriers against smuggling – Munich

It was once a model project – an electronically controlled barrier built on the Hörweg between Neuaubing and Freiham. It was intended to prevent sneak traffic on the A99 and, as a uniform system, also effectively prevent unwanted passages at other points in the city. At the same time, it should allow buses and rescue vehicles to pass through. But the concept failed. Within two years, there was around 40 damage to the Hörweg, most of it due to vandalism. Car traffic flowed despite the closure, the barrier had become a “permanent job” for the building department. And the cost of the repairs far exceeded the purchase price. Which is why the authorities eventually decided not to repair the barrier. Now a sign draws attention to the ban on driving through, which, however, as Aubing’s local politicians know, “is hardly effective”. In the opinion of the district committee, a new pilot project should now do the trick: retractable bollards in public street space. So far, such bollards have only been on private property in Munich. The administration was asked to consider the proposal.
