Munich: Bahn renews bridges – Munich

Motorists in the east of the city and passengers on the S3 and S7 S-Bahn lines must expect restrictions in the near future. Deutsche Bahn (DB) is renovating three bridges on Balanstrasse and Werinherstrasse. This leads to road closures and timetable changes.

To the west of Ostbahnhof, three railway bridges cross the busy Balanstrasse. The DB is renovating the northern overpass, on which the Munich-Rosenheim rail link runs, and the southern one in the direction of Giesing. The new bridges are being built across the street, right next to the old ones. After they are demolished, they are pushed to their final position during a longer road and track closure.

The first preparatory work is currently underway, and the main construction phase will start at the beginning of April. Balanstraße between Orleans-Straße and St.-Cajetan-Straße is expected to be closed from April 4th to 22nd, i.e. mainly during the Easter holidays. Driving into the city, traffic will be diverted via St.-Martin-Strasse to Rosenheimer Strasse. Traffic out of town is diverted either via Orleans-/Rosenheimer Straße or via Regerstraße, according to the mobility department. Access from the path “Am Giesinger Feld” to Balanstraße will also be blocked. A detour for pedestrians and cyclists with as few restrictions as possible is currently being coordinated.

In rail traffic, there are also timetable changes on individual nights on the Munich-Rosenheim route and on the S-Bahn lines S3 and S7 to Giesing. The shoring of both bridges will be erected in mid-June – also with the full closure of Balanstraße for around a week. The demolition of the previous bridges and the insertion of the new structures will take place from October 29th to November 3rd. Then both railway lines and Balanstraße must be completely closed. In total, DB is investing around 15 million euros in the bridge renewal. The work is being carried out in coordination with the city of Munich, which is renovating Balanstraße and switching the district heating network from steam to heating water on a large scale.

On Werinherstraße, 500 meters further south, the DB is renovating another railway bridge. The new building will be widened by almost ten meters for separate pedestrian and cycle paths and a bus lane. The overhead lines are currently being rebuilt over a length of 300 meters, eleven masts have to be set up for this. About 30 signal cables have to be extended and laid over a temporary cable bridge.

The S-Bahn traffic on lines S3 and S7 is also affected by this preliminary work. So there is rail replacement traffic between Ostbahnhof and Deisenhofen or Perlach on several nights. The S3 will be diverted between Deisenhofen and Hauptbahnhof via Solln. At the beginning of June, the route will then be closed for three days in order to partially demolish the bridge. The new structure west of the tracks will then be constructed.

During the second track closure (October 29 to November 4), the old bridge will be demolished during a six-day complete closure of the railway line, and then the new structure will be inserted. The costs amount to around ten million euros.
