Can “Barbie” overtake films like “Avatar”?

“Barbie” is currently breaking many records. Does Greta Gerwig’s film have what it takes to top the list of top-grossing films?

The whole world seems in pink right now”To be Barbie” fever: Almost every week since the cinema was released there have been new reports that the film by director Greta Gerwig (40) has broken a new record. Is the film really that successful? And what would have to happen for it to actually be the most important breaks all records and becomes the most successful film of all time at the box office?

The hype about “Barbie” starring Margot Robbie (33) is huge. There’s no denying that the film is very, very successful and the road to success is probably far from over. But will that be enough to put it on a par with the “Avatar” films or “Titanic”? These are the previous “Barbie” milestones:

The most recent success: The story about the famous doll has now overtaken the superhero epic “The Dark Knight” as the most successful Warner Bros film at the US box office. “Barbie” broke numerous records right from the start: “Barbie” made Greta Gerwig the most successful director of all time at the US box office.

The film grossed 155 million US dollars (around 140 million euros) on its first weekend in the USA. Never in the history of Hollywood has a woman-directed film garnered more early box office sales in the United States than “Barbie.”

On top of that, it was the best start for a toy-based film (previously “Transformers 3: Dark Side of the Moon” at around $116 million) and the strongest first three days for a non-ending Warner film is from the DC Universe or is a sequel.

Does “Barbie” have what it takes to be the highest-grossing film of all time?

At the moment it seems like “Barbie” just can’t be stopped. But if you take a realistic look at the official list of the most successful films of all time, you will quickly realize that it will probably not be enough for first place. On the Box Office Mojo by IMDbPro page lists those films that have earned the most money at the box office worldwide through their box office results. “Barbie” is currently in 25th place in this ranking with almost 1.2 billion US dollars – below “Iron Man 3” (2013) and “Fast & Furious 8” (2017).

To climb to the top, “Barbie” would have to gross more than twice as much worldwide: “Avatar” (2009) is currently in first place with almost three billion US dollars in box office earnings. In second to fifth place are “Avengers: Endgame” (2.8 billion), “Avatar 2” (2.3 billion), “Titanic” (2.2 billion) and “Star Wars: Episode VII” (2 billion ).
