The US band Television rose to fame in 1977 with the album “Marquee Moon”. She was one of the most influential representatives of the New York punk scene. Former frontman Tom Verlaine has died at the age of 73.
The US singer, guitarist and songwriter Tom Verlaine is dead. The former frontman of the punk band Television died in New York after a short illness. Daughter of rock legend Patti Smith, reported.
Verlaine, whose real name was Thomas Miller, was 73 years old. “He died peacefully in New York City surrounded by close friends. His vision and imagination will be missed,” Smith said.
Comeback in the 90’s
Verlaine formed the band Television in 1973 with guitarist Richard Lloyd. They became famous with the punk album “Marquee Moon” (1977) with the title song of the same name. Television was one of the most influential bands associated with the legendary Manhattan punk club “CBGB”.
After Television disbanded in 1978, Verlaine was touring as a solo musician. He has worked with numerous other artists, including David Bowie and Patti Smith.
Television re-issued it in the ’90s, Verlaine and Lloyd released a studio album in 1992 and did a couple of concerts.
