Many motorcycle owners deregister their vehicle in autumn because leaves and mud, rain and cold reduce the desire to ride – and increase the risk of accidents. However, if the motorcycle has to be kept outdoors over the winter, a weatherproof cover definitely makes sense.

In principle, it is always better for a motorcycle to be kept in a garage over the winter so that it does not have to be exposed to local weather conditions (such as sun and rain, snow and ice). However, if the owner does not have a closed place to park his vehicle, he has no choice but to park his motorized two-wheeler outdoors. So that it doesn’t run the risk of rusting or being covered by a thick layer of dust, there is a suitable one Motorcycle cover recommended. This article explains what advantages the tarpaulin has for your bike and what you should consider when purchasing it.

This is what makes a good motorcycle cover

One Motorcycle cover For outdoor use, one thing has to be above all: weatherproof. The tarpaulin should protect the motorcycle from all weather influences so that it can survive the winter undamaged. This is made possible by various factors that you should pay attention to when purchasing, such as:

  • The size
Depending on the manufacturer, there are tarpaulins for motorcycles in different sizes and designs. The most important thing is that you pay attention to the exact dimensions of the motorcycle cover so that it can completely enclose your vehicle.
  • The seams
So that the tarpaulin can withstand wind and weather, the seams should not only be sealed (preferably double), but also waterproof. The more stable the seam is, the more durable the motorcycle cover is.
  • The material
To prevent rust stains, the material (e.g. made of Oxford, Polyester or nylon) be waterproof but also breathable. This is made possible by special ventilation openings that should be integrated into the tarpaulin. They prevent the formation of condensation.
  • The fortification
With special straps and elastic bands, the motorcycle cover can be easily attached to the vehicle. They help to fix the tarpaulin to the motorcycle so that it does not slip, even in strong winds.
  • The castle
You can use a locking hole with a sealing ring to lock your motorcycle as usual to protect it against theft. You close the tarpaulin and the motorcycle together.
  • The viewing window
Not every Motorcycle cover has a viewing window, but it makes sense to make the license plate visible through a transparent recess in the rear area. This is important if you park your vehicle in a public parking lot.

A motorcycle cover offers these advantages

In addition to the fact that a motorcycle cover keeps your vehicle dry and safe through the winter, the tarpaulin has other advantages: Since the sun shines all year round, the paint under the UV-resistant cover is protected from the sun’s rays. And so that it doesn’t get scratched when putting on and taking off the tarpaulin high quality motorcycle covers a special inner surface (usually made of soft polyester fabric) that protects the sensitive paint.

How to properly care for your motorcycle cover

An ordinary one Motorcycle cover is usually not washable. However, the tarpaulin should be cleaned when it is no longer needed – so that it can be used again next winter season. It is completely sufficient if you remove dust and dirt, pollen and leaves from the material. You should also inspect the cover for possible holes to ensure that it is still not letting water through. Before you fold the tarpaulin after thorough cleaning, it should be completely dry.
