Mother of baby found in trash remains in jail

Although his lawyer presented “a project”, she did not obtain his release. Incarcerated after her police custody on October 28, the mother of the baby found abandoned in a trash can in Rennes will remain in prison. Indicted for attempted murder, this young woman aged 17 and originally from Mayotte had requested her release before the investigating chamber. A request rejected by the magistrates, who ordered his continued detention.

The young woman, unknown to the justice services, had given birth alone in her home in the Sarah-Bernhardt district on October 20. For an as yet undetermined reason, she decided to throw her baby into a buried container near her home. Born a few hours earlier, the infant was saved thanks to the intervention of the firefighters, called by a resident who had heard the baby’s cries. Noah Briac Alban was treated at the South Hospital and is today “in good health”, despite a skull fracture. To investigators, the mother explained that she had “put the baby in a plastic bag then in a trash bag which she then put in the trash container near her home,” explained prosecutor Philippe Astruc. “It’s an atrocious and heartbreaking decision, the kind that you regret the next second,” replied Me Amina Saadaoui.

The mother “immediately regretted” her action

The young woman’s lawyer assures that her client “immediately regretted” her action. “Her detention is complicated for her. Because the case was highly publicized, but also because she is a young, minor woman who has never been faced with justice.” Having been unable to obtain the release of his client, Me Saadaoui assures that a new request will be made “in due time”. “This ultimate measure was in no way essential”, considers the advice of the young mother, who recalls that pre-trial detention for a minor “must remain the exception”.

The young woman was able to be identified thanks to the statements of the child’s father. Confused by his DNA, this man from Mayotte explained that he had had a sexual relationship with the suspect. At work when the abandoned baby was discovered, he was exonerated and left free.
