Some regions in southern France are suffering from an acute plague of mosquitoes. A young French woman, who was the victim of a real attack, felt this now.

The mosquito plague in southern France is affecting people. According to a media report, a 20-year-old student was the victim of a real attack while working in a melon field. “I had never seen anything like it. They just got in everywhere, in my mouth, under my sunglasses. It was amazing that some of my colleagues didn’t seem to have been bitten at all.”

Mosquito plague in the wetlands

As the newspaper “Midi Libri” reports, the incident happened in the village of Fourques on the edge of the Camargue Natural Park, a large alluvial plain famous for its wild horses and flamingos. The student was in the region as part of an internship and had therefore specially protected herself with long clothing and a special anti-mosquito agent – that’s what she thought. But the measures were apparently ineffective to avoid the attack. “When I got home I found my legs were swollen and covered with stitches. I counted over 200! The problem was the pain didn’t go away. The stitches were burning. I couldn’t sleep or even my legs touch,” she told the newspaper. It was probably lucky that she is not allergic to mosquito bites.

The doctor writes the student off sick for four days

A doctor had to write her off sick for a few days, she received painkillers, antihistamines and cortisone to counteract the swelling. “But the doctor (…) strongly advised me not to expose myself to the mosquitoes again. He had never seen such a reaction.”

Recently there had been numerous complaints from tourists on the southern French coast about mosquitoes. The authorities confirmed that the region is currently suffering from a real plague.
