More than 11,300 people evacuated, homes destroyed, the situation remains “unfavorable”

In Cazaux, in the town of Teste-de-Buch, it is desolation this Friday morning. The fire that broke out last Tuesday reached the lake during the night, devastating a restaurant and three homes. And it continues to progress, the situation being “still unfavorable” according to the Gironde prefecture.

In three days, the two forest fires ravaged more than 7,300 hectares in the municipalities of La Teste-de-Buch and Landiras where, that night, nearly 500 people were evacuated. In total, more than 11,300 people had to leave their homes or resorts because of the progression of the flames, including 10,000 on the Teste-de-Buch side where 3,150 hectares went up in smoke. A hundred houses were saved.

In Landiras, in the Langon district where 1,300 people were evacuated, 4,200 hectares burned according to state services, which specify that “the fire is not yet fixed and is progressing”. Open rooms have been opened in Saint-Symphorien and Villandraut.

“A new day of struggle has begun. Firefighters supported by military units and air assets are more than ever committed to fixing these large-scale fires. Nearly 1,000 firefighters, 3 Canadairs and 1 Dash aircraft are mobilized. The drops resumed early this morning, ”says the prefecture of Gironde, which calls on residents not to go there so as not to hinder the action of the relief workers.

The department is placed on red vigilance for forest risks, in particular due to weather conditions, the Gironde being one of the eleven departments placed on orange vigilance for the heat wave.
