No getting around without an inflatable boat. In Russia, more than 10,000 houses are under water after continuous rain and a dam burst. The authorities expect water levels to continue to rise.

According to authorities, more than 10,000 houses are under water in the Russian regions of Urals, Volga and Siberia due to flooding in several rivers. The Emergencies Ministry in Moscow said a total of around 10,400 residential buildings were flooded.

The authorities expect water levels to continue to rise due to high temperatures and the associated melting snow and the breaking of the ice layer on the rivers.

Dam burst in the Orsk region

A dam in the Urals burst on Friday. There was massive flooding throughout the region and thousands of people had to be evacuated. An investigation has been launched into who is responsible for the dam failure. According to prosecutors, the investigation is into neglecting maintenance of the dam, which was built in 2010.

Damage was also reported in nearby Kazakhstan. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev spoke yesterday of the worst natural disaster in the past 80 years.
