Warm milk with honey used to be the best home remedy when you couldn’t fall asleep. The Moon Milk is the modern upgrade. But what belongs in the trend drink? And what effect does it really have?

Warm milk with honey is a real classic when it comes to a nightcap. But there is an even more effective way: The moonmilk should help even better to calm down and disappear faster into the land of dreams. We explain what belongs in the trend drink and why it can really help you fall asleep.

Moon Milk: What is it?

In fact, the basis of Grandma’s classic milk with honey and that of Moon Milk is similar: milk and honey also belong in the almost magical-sounding drink. However, the moon milk is also made with spices and ingredients from the ayurvedic cuisine refined. It is a bit reminiscent of the healthy trend drink Golden Milk, which is also prepared with ingredients from the Far East.

In the case of moon milk, these are spices such as cinnamon and nutmeg and herbs, mushrooms and roots such as ashwagandha, reishi, roseroot and ginseng. They naturally help to relax and reduce stress. Such ingredients will also adaptogens called. This makes them the perfect ingredient for a soothing and aromatic moonmilk. And they actually make the trend drink more effective than the classic milk with honey – and of course also more exciting in terms of taste.

What is the effect of the Moon Milk?

In the end, there are many factors that make Moon Milk the ideal nightcap do: On the one hand it is the cozy warmth that relaxes you. Milk also contains tryptophan, which is converted into melatonin in the body, known as the sleep hormone. Honey contains antioxidants and also has an anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting effect.

In addition, spices such as cinnamon and nutmeg have a calming effect and help against tension. The use of spices to combat stress has long been established in traditional Indian medicine: Ayurveda relies on adaptogens as a natural stress killers and uses them to restore balance in the body. Above all Ashwagandha has such an effect and is also known as a sleeping berry. So if you are stressed in the evening and therefore cannot fall asleep, you should definitely try the soothing Moon Milk.

Recipe for Moon Milk

Cow’s milk is usually the basis for Moon Milk. But of course you can also prepare them with plant milk or other alternatives.

Ingredients for a classic moon milk

  • 200 ml milk/milk alternative
  • 1 tsp Ashwagandha (and/or other adaptogens)
  • Spices to refine (e.g. cinnamon, turmeric, nutmeg)
  • 1/2 tsp Honey

preparation

  1. Heat the milk in a small saucepan. But beware: not cook. Otherwise the valuable ingredients in honey are lost if you add it to milk that is too hot.
  2. Add ashwagandha and the remaining spices and remove the pot from the heat.
  3. Pour the mixture into a cup and refine with the honey. You can also decorate the moon milk or spice it up with other ingredients.

There are many more too recipes for the Moon Milk: You can refine it with vanilla, caramel, beetroot and other ingredients. You can decide for yourself depending on your taste. It is important that the basic ingredients are included so that the stress-relieving effect can take place.
