Monuments in Munich: There is only room for democrats on the ground – Munich

Historical dates such as November 9th are touchstones of the culture of remembrance. In Munich there are rulers on horseback, a secret list of bad street names and democratic commemoration on the ground. A polemic.

Nikolaus Hollweg, Friedrich Fink, Max Schoberth and Rudolf Schraut gave their lives for democracy. The four police officers were shot on November 9, 1923, 98 years ago that Tuesday. They fell when they stopped Adolf Hitler’s attempted coup at the Feldherrnhalle. Their names were then forgotten and remained so for more than 70 years. And when they were remembered in 1994, that memory was trampled, literally. An inconspicuous floor slab at the scene of the event should suffice. There it was and whoever wanted to read its inscription had to look for the plaque first.
