Minus 53 degrees in Mohe: historically low temperatures in China

It is currently minus 53 degrees in the Chinese city of Mohe. These are the lowest temperatures ever recorded in China. The trend towards extreme weather conditions has increased overall for 2022.

It is historic low temperatures on Sunday in the north Chinese city of Mohe. The 1969 record of minus 52.3 degrees was broken by minus 53 degrees, according to the official Xinhua news agency. For three days in a row, the temperatures there have already fallen to more than minus 50 degrees.

Extreme cold has hit Heilongjiang Province, leaving several areas in the Great Hinggan Mountains struggling with extremely cold temperatures.

The city of Mohe experienced snow and ice for eight months a year, with an annual average temperature hovering around minus three degrees, Xinhua reported.

Lowest temperature in Germany: minus 37.8 degrees

The state of Bavaria recorded the lowest temperatures in Germany last year. In mid-December, temperatures there fell to minus 19.3 degrees. However, the lowest temperature ever measured in Germany is even lower: in 1929 it was minus 37.8 degrees in Upper Bavaria.

According to the European Earth Observation Program Copernicus the weather was often extreme last year. Temperatures rose, making the past eight years the warmest on record. According to the data, Europe is the fastest warming continent. Globally it was 0.3 degrees warmer last year than in 1991.
