“Minecraft” has sold over 300 million copies

“Minecraft” is the first video game to sell at least 300 million copies. Its publisher Microsoft announced this milestone during a live stream for the Minecraft community. The second best-selling video game is “Grand Theft Auto 5,” which has sold 185 million copies, according to Take-Two’s latest quarterly figures.

Both games could hardly be different in terms of content, but are characterized by their longevity: “GTA 5” has ten years under its belt, “Minecraft” will soon be 15. The creative game is also supplied with new content by Microsoft’s Mojang studio. During the most recent community livestream, Mojang announced new challenge rooms and copper building blocks, among other things.

The fact that the updates for Minecraft have recently taken a while has caused discontent in the community in recent weeks. The new record sales figures show the continued popularity of the game, which is available for pretty much every platform – in addition to PC and console versions, mobile versions of Minecraft are also available.

“Minecraft” is not only often bought, but also actively played: There are thriving communities on YouTube and Twitch that reach an audience of millions with their videos and streams. Microsoft rarely announces player numbers; in 2019, studio boss Helen Chiang put active players at 112 million per month. At that time, “Minecraft” was one of the most played video games in the world.

It is extremely unlikely that “GTA 5” will catch up with the creative game “Minecraft” at some point: the days of the action game are numbered, with “GTA 6” a successor is already in the starting blocks. Meanwhile, there is no end in sight for “Minecraft”: it is quite possible that there will be more sales milestones to celebrate in the coming years.
