The census was also postponed because of Corona – it starts a year late on May 15th. For the first time, questions are asked about net cold rent, the duration and reasons for the vacancy and the type of heating.

From mid-May, around ten million randomly selected German citizens will be asked about themselves and their living conditions in the first census in eleven years. According to the Federal Statistical Office, data on the population as well as on the living and employment situation is to be collected nationwide. Deadline is May 15th.

Some of the surveys take the form of half-hour personal interviews, for which helpers are still being sought. The rest of the information should be submitted online.

The data is evaluated anonymously. The Federal Office said it was not possible to draw conclusions about individuals. The results should be available in November 2023, the costs are given as 1.5 billion euros.

Owners must also provide information

All of the approximately 23 million owners or administrations of living space must also provide information about apartments in writing or online. You will receive questions about the year of construction, size and rent in the mail. Around 300,000 residents of dormitories will also be surveyed.

Some information is requested for the first time, such as the net cold rent, duration and reasons for the vacancy of apartments and the type of heating.

Better basis for housing planning

This should enable cities and communities to plan housing based on people’s specific needs, said Dittrich. A census is actually planned every ten years. The scheduled date of 2021 had been postponed due to the corona pandemic.
