Accelerated asylum procedures, fewer benefits for asylum seekers, more deportations – according to a survey, the agreed political plans do not really convince many citizens.

According to 78 percent of eligible voters, the asylum policy measures adopted by the federal and state governments will not lead to significantly fewer refugees coming to Germany. This was the result of a survey by the elections research group for the ZDF political barometer, which was published on Friday. At the Prime Minister’s Conference on Monday, for example, accelerated procedures for asylum seekers, fewer benefits and more deportations were decided. According to the survey, only 18 percent of those surveyed expect the goal to be irregular Reducing migration is also achieved.

The issue of migration continues to concern citizens: a majority of 52 percent describe issues related to this in the survey as the most important political problems in Germany at the moment. The climate and energy sector follows in second place with a clear gap of 20 percent. Of those surveyed, 63 percent are of the opinion that Germany cannot cope with the number of refugees coming from crisis areas. Only 35 percent say the opposite.

Overall, 59 percent of those surveyed are of the opinion that the Berlin traffic light coalition is doing its job poorly. Only 35 percent think that the federal government works rather well. However, a change to a government made up of the SPD and CDU/CSU under the leadership of the SPD, which currently has a majority in the Bundestag, is not viewed much more positively: only 26 percent think that such a government would then do its job better. 51 percent believe such a change in government would not make a big difference.

The ZDF political barometer survey was carried out by the Mannheim Elections Research Group. The interviews were conducted by telephone from November 7th to 9th, 2023 from 1,234 randomly selected eligible voters. Both landline and mobile numbers were taken into account. The survey is representative of the population eligible to vote in Germany. However, surveys are always subject to uncertainty.
