Migration: Faeser needs Macron’s help – Politics

from

Constanze von Bullion and Josef Kelnberger, Berlin/Brussels

She was hardly in office when the new Federal Minister of the Interior, Nancy Faeser, made it clear that dealing with migration would not go on like under Horst Seehofer. A “new spirit” is finding its way into asylum policy, the SPD politician announced in January. The federal government wants to end dying in the Mediterranean, strengthen legal immigration into the EU, and push back illegal migration. Faeser suggested that Germany could take the lead in taking on refugees with a “coalition of member states willing to accept them”. She is looking for ways “with the French in particular” so that other states “follow the good example”.
