Microsoft’s VR Platform “AltspaceVR” Preparing to shut down on March 10, with the team revealing to focus on the Microsoft Mesh (MM) platform, the world of Metaverse for business instead.

AltspaceVR prepares to shut down for the second round

Altspace VR was founded by Eric Romo in 2013. He was a director of product for Facebook Reality Labs Social Experiences. After facing financial issues the platform announced it was shutting down, which Microsoft acquired the platform in 2017.

It was speculated that Microsoft bought the platform to compete with Facebook in developing VR.

Recently, however, AltspaceVR is preparing to shut down for a second round as it sees business opportunities other than small vendors. It will remain in the metaverse industry under the MM banner.

“We saw an opportunity for VR to extend services from consumers to businesses. And now there’s an even bigger goal. Step up to a more open, accessible, and secure experience in the Metaverse.”

Microsoft Mesh

The Microsoft Mesh platform was released in November 2021, built to support a personal and fun metaverse. As more and more businesses began to work from home, Microsoft saw an opportunity to build an office in the metaverse world.

MM is part of the Microsoft Teams platform for communicating in the business world with features such as video conferencing and chat rooms.
