Microsoft sells replacement parts for Surface devices to repair itself

Microsoft has started selling replacement parts for its own Surface products itself. This means that devices such as laptops and tablets can be repaired by the user himself, which is particularly useful after the warranty period has expired. Replacement parts vary by product, but mostly include the kickstand, screen, SSD, and battery. Keyboards, USB and audio connections for self-repair are also offered for some devices.

The list of Surface models for which spare parts are offered in the Microsoft store includes Surface Pro 7, Surface Pro 8, Surface Pro 9 and Surface Pro 9 5G as well as Surface Laptop 3, Surface Laptop 4, Surface Laptop 5, Surface Laptop Go 2, Surface Laptop Studio and Surface Studio 2 Plus. In addition to the spare parts, Microsoft promises to supply necessary components such as screws. However, tools are not included. This can be ordered from iFixit, with whom Microsoft has been cooperating since late 2021.

Just two years ago, the iFixit boss had railed against Apple, Samsung and Microsoft because large manufacturers too often unnecessarily complicate repairs, for example through contracts with suppliers. Microsoft apparently took this to heart, because the following year Microsoft made its entry-level Surface Laptop Go 2 notebook repair-friendly. The group is taking the next step with its own spare parts for self-repair.

The Surface replacement parts are according to Microsoft initially only available in the United States, Canada and France. However, Surface dealers in other countries can also access it via existing channels, so that the individual components could also be obtained through them. When Microsoft will offer the spare parts through its own online shop in other countries is still open and will be announced later.

A replacement screen for the Surface Studio 2 Plus costs 2159 euros and a replacement keyboard for the Surface Laptop 4 costs 130 euros. However, this is still significantly cheaper than a new device. The 512 GB SSD for the Surface Pro 9 is also significantly more expensive at 155 euros than M.2 2230 SSDs of this capacity in retail. You can get these for less than 100 euros.

In return, the user willing to exchange gets a component that works in the Surface device. With components from other manufacturers, on the other hand, compatibility problems cannot be ruled out. However, it is unfortunate that no SSDs with more than 512 GB are offered as spare parts, although M.2 2230 SSDs with 1 or 2 TB are easily available from third-party manufacturers. More storage capacity can only be achieved with Microsoft components via external hard drives.
