The final phase of the Roman Republic, like the fall of the empire half a millennium later, has always particularly stimulated the interest and imagination of those born after it. Given the many strong characters of that era, the depictions tend to be person-centered. As a rule, it is Cicero or Caesar who are the focus: one because we learn a lot about him in his speeches and letters; the other because he is the one who ultimately wins the race.
