Michael Schumacher: A fan wants to sell his precious souvenir collection

Around 160 rare collector’s items from the career of Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher will go under the hammer until September 6th. According to auction house RM Sotheby’s, the exhibits come from a private Japanese collection that has been carefully expanded for more than 30 years.

Apparently, the collector had no preference for one particular Schumacher racing team, but concentrated on his entire career. Probably the most expensive item could be a replica of a helmet from 1991 that Schumacher wore to debut his Formula 1 career. The final price is currently estimated at around 60,000 US dollars.

Michael Schumacher’s helmets are very expensive – but hats and toys are not

In general, helmets are probably what you have to dig deep into your pocket for. Sotheby’s also sees a good chance of pole position for the Bell Benetton helmet, which Schumacher wore on the way to his first world title in 1994 – here too the company has given $60,000 as a possible goal.

But it doesn’t always have to cost tens of thousands to secure a piece of Schumi history. Toys related to the racing legend are said to be available under $200. Visors, gloves and shoes are also apparently much cheaper. Even the famous hats that Michael Schumacher could be seen wearing at almost every race are valued at around $200 to $500.

There are also a few pieces by Michael Schumacher’s son Mick, such as a thank you letter or hats. The “Full Throttle” auction starts on August 16th and runs until September 6th. Anyone who happens to be in Monterey between August 17th and 19th can view parts of the collection live. Incidentally, this is the same auction that is expected to see numerous rare Ferraris go under the hammer, including a million-dollar wreck (read more here).
