Meta and Ray-Ban have announced new smart glasses that allow you to stream directly to Facebook and Instagram. The next generation of smart Meta glasses will be available on the market from October 17th and will cost at least 330 euros – or significantly more depending on the combination and features.

The smart glasses from Meta and Ray-Ban should be able to be freely configured, including two different basic designs. You can also choose the colors freely; Meta offers a transparent version, for example. The glasses don’t have a fixed name – instead, Meta speaks of the “Ray-Ban Meta Collection”. Meta called the previous model presented in 2021 “Ray-Ban Stories”.

Little has changed in terms of core functions: Meta’s Ray-Ban glasses can record videos and take photos. A single ultra-wide-angle camera with 12 megapixels sits in a lens hole next to one of the lenses – the second lens hole on the other side is a dummy that is intended to create symmetry. The camera can record videos at 1080p30 resolution (1920 × 1080 pixels, 30 fps) and stream them directly to the meta platforms Facebook and Instagram. When filming is in progress, an LED display informs outsiders that the camera is active. In a first hands-on from heise online, the streaming quality was also impressive because of the good image stabilization.

The glasses are also equipped with five microphones so that you can also speak while streaming. Telephone calls are also made via the microphones. The Ray-Ban glasses reproduce sound via bone sound. Meta promises up to 50 percent more maximum volume than the previous model. A smartphone that can connect to the glasses via Bluetooth 5.3 is responsible for delivery. The smart glasses also support Wi-Fi 6.

Photos taken and videos recorded can also be saved on the 32 GB internal memory. It is controlled by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1 mobile processor. The glasses are protected against splash water according to IPX4, but should not be submerged.

According to the manufacturer, the battery of the Ray-Ban glasses from Meta lasts up to 4 hours with mixed use – so long-lasting streaming sessions are not possible. Meta includes a charging case that should provide power for up to 32 hours of additional use. A full charge of the glasses takes 75 minutes.
