Mesut Özil suspended at Fenerbahce – future open

Mesut Ozil Fenerbahce

Mesut Özil has been suspended at Fenerbahce with immediate effect. The future of the 2014 world champion is now more than uncertain.

Fenerbahce made it short and painless: the top Turkish club announced the suspension of Mesut Özil with a couplet. In addition to Özil, national player Ozan Tufan is no longer part of the squad.

The club did not provide any information about the background. According to reports, however, there are several reasons for this radical step. Coach Ismail Kartal is said to have been dissatisfied with Özil’s condition for a long time.

Özil, who was recently injured for a long time, doesn’t seem fit, but always wants to play. Kartal gave the playmaker another chance to start in the 2-1 win over Konyaspor last weekend, but Özil remained pale and was substituted at half-time.

Özil is said to have been upset about this decision and there was apparently a war of words with Kartal. Later, Ozan Tufan, who only ended his loan in Watford in the winter and returned to Fenerbahce, is said to have had a serious dialogue with Kartal. Fenerbahce now pulled the rip cord and suspended both players.

Fenerbahce President Ali Koc criticizes Özil

Fenerbahce President Ali Koc criticized Özil at the beginning of the season: “Mesut should focus more on football and leave his business behind.”

Özil actually increased his performance after that and was even the top scorer at Fenerbahce in between. Things haven’t been going too well since the change of coach and the return of club legend Ismail Kartal.

Özil still has a contract with Fenerbahce until 2024. Whether he will fulfill it is currently rather questionable.
