Habil Kılıç had his vegetable shop where “Himmet Market” has been written on the panes for years – on Bad-Schachener-Strasse in the Ramersdorf district of Munich. It is the morning of August 29, 2001 when terrorists from the “National Socialist Underground” (NSU) entered the shop and murdered the 38-year-old with two head shots. Exactly 20 years later to the day there is a memorial service.
Lord Mayor Reiter: “Habil Kılıç is missing”
In a first commemorative event on Sunday morning, Munich’s Lord Mayor Dieter Reiter laid a wreath for the murdered Munich family man at the former crime scene. “Habil Kılıç is missing. He is missing from his family, he is missing from his friends and he is missing from his city,” said Reiter. The OB appealed: “Acts like this show the destructive force of right-wing terror in Germany. We have to fight it, on all levels. None of us must look the other way, we all have to stand together and very decisively against agitation and violence. “
In the afternoon, the Munich Turkish Council invited another memorial service to commemorate the other NSU murder victims at the scene of the crime in Bad-Schachener-Straße.
Homicide Squad investigated in the wrong direction
Habil Kılıç was the fourth victim of the right-wing terrorist NSU, almost four years later the Munich Theodoros Boulgarides was also murdered in the Westend. While Habil Kılıç’s family suspected a right-wing extremist background to the crime as early as 2005, the homicide commission investigated in a completely different direction. For a long time she suspected organized crime in drug trafficking as the motive – and mainly investigated the German-Turkish milieu. At the former delicatessen shop in Bad-Schachener-Straße, a plaque with the names of all NSU victims has been commemorating the right-wing extremist murders since 2013.
Turkish Council calls for decisive action against the law
Between 2000 and 2007, the members of the NSU killed a total of eight people with Turkish, one with Greek roots and a German policewoman – in Munich, Nuremberg, Hamburg, Rostock, Kassel, Dortmund and Heilbronn. On the occasion of the anniversary, the Turkish Council also calls for “the dangers of racism and right-wing extremism to be finally taken seriously” and for politicians and the security authorities to act decisively.
