The 110th Hamburg Derby has not found a winner. FC St. Pauli and Hamburger SV drew 2-2 (2-0) in the second division on Friday evening. HSV made up a 0-2 deficit. Overall, the point win was a happy one.
Because the St. Paulians had put their stamp on the game early on. Captain Jackson Irvine put the home team in front after a corner in the 15th minute. HSV scored the second goal themselves: keeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes chased the ball into his own goal after a failed back pass from Guilherme Ramos (27th). But the guests came out of the break transformed: with a double strike, Robert Glatzel (58th) and Immanuel Pherai (60th) equalized the guests’ first two chances and created tension once again. As a result, little happened on the pitch in the heavy snow.

Both fan camps had set off a lot of pyrotechnics on the way to the game and also while the ball was rolling in the packed Millerntor Stadium. Otherwise it remained quiet until the final whistle. The snow had more influence on the game anyway – and perhaps also cooled things down. With an overall happy draw, HSV maintained its three-point gap to the leaders. The pursuers in the table can now move closer to the leading duo. Holstein Kiel would even overtake HSV with a win on Saturday against SV Wehen Wiesbaden.

HSV coach Walter satisfied, St. Paulis Hürzeler not
HSV coach Tim Walter had words of praise for his team after the 2-2 draw in the Kiez: “If you come back like that after two slapstick goals like that, it’s worthy of all honor. We showed a good performance from the start and the opponent faced problems.” During the break he showed his players solutions. The own goals were “played beautifully”. And he described the result as “absolutely deserved”.
However, the goal shooting statistics clearly went to the home team with 18:6. Accordingly, Fabian Hürzeler also had a completely different opinion. The result was “disappointing” and his team played “very, very dominantly”. “We had great chances to make it 3-0, but we didn’t kill the game. And so HSV came back from nowhere,” said St. Pauli’s coach, annoyed, who was “satisfied with the performance” but “with the result definitely not”. But he will also try to get the positive out of this game.
Irvine hits HSV to the core
The first minutes of the derby were promising – with offensive actions on both sides. St. Pauli was convincing in terms of play, HSV repeatedly put their opponents under pressure with high pressing. But the guests seemed to be able to deal with the pressure of this particular duel much worse than St. Pauli. After a cross from Connor Metcalfe, HSV goalkeeper Heuer Fernandes dropped the ball in the 14th minute – and was very lucky that his front men were just able to prevent the score from going 0-1.
But the goal came just a minute later – after a well-rehearsed corner kick variation: Marcel Hartel didn’t pull his cross towards the goal, but instead surprised the opposing defense with a flat pass towards the penalty spot. There Australian Irvine had a free shot and hit the corner to make it 1-0. HSV protested because of an alleged foul on Jonas Meffert, but he probably went down too easily.

St. Pauli now went one step further and pushed their city rivals far back. Hartel’s shot was too central (20th), Johannes Eggestein’s goal just seconds later didn’t count because provider Elias Saad was offside.

And then came the scene of the game – incredibly bitter for HSV, a laughing stock for everyone who supported the St. Paulians and, above all, bizarre because not one player in brown was on the ball in the whole situation: this year Fernandes led one Goal kick with a short pass to Stephan Ambrosius, who immediately played the next one to Ramos. So far so normal in Walter’s game idea, despite the difficult space conditions.

However, the Portuguese Ramos wanted to pass back to his compatriot in goal and he “ran free”. The pass turned into an unintentional shot on goal. The ball would probably have bounced past the goal, but Heuer Fernandes didn’t want to take any risks and thus completed the slapstick performance. Because the ball bounced over the uneven grass just in front of him, his attempted release failed completely. This year Fernandes hit the ball against the bottom edge of the crossbar and scored a totally crazy own goal, the likes of which have hardly ever been seen before (27th).
It speaks for HSV that the team didn’t fall apart as a result. But even if she tried to find an answer, there was nothing more than yellow cards for Ramos and Meffert, for whom it was the fifth (break against Paderborn). St. Pauli continued to play with concentration and defended cleverly.

Glatzel and Pherai punish St. Pauli’s sleepiness
After the break there was a delay, first due to burned-out pyrotechnics, then due to the increasing snowfall. That’s why from now on we played with an orange ball. But despite the warning color, the St. Paulians suddenly lacked any insight in defense. After a sharp cross from Ignace van der Brempt, Glatzel just had to push the ball over the line. In the next attack, Pherai was able to receive the ball undisturbed at the penalty spot, turn and shoot. After an hour, the game was completely open again after HSV’s first two real chances.
With smaller chances from Metcalfe (63′) and joker Etienne Amenyido (70′) as well as a diving header from Hartel into the arms of Heuer Fernandes (71′), St. Pauli reported back. After the lines had been cleared of fresh snow, the final phase began. However, the home team could no longer create any chances against a more concentrated HSV defense. With their good defensive work deep into the nine-minute stoppage time, the guests ultimately earned the point, at least in this respect. And St. Pauli remains unbeaten in the 15th game of the season.
Police draw a positive interim conclusion in the evening
In the evening – around two hours after the final whistle – the police came to a positive interim conclusion: “Our security concept, which at its core provides for the strict separation of fans, has proven successful,” summed up police spokeswoman Sandra Levgrün. A clash could have been prevented. Around 1,700 police officers were on duty around the city derby.
