Media reports: Kühnert is to become the new general secretary of the SPD

The new leadership of the SPD is taking shape. The new general secretary is likely to be ex-Juso boss Kühnert. The party leadership has agreed on this after several concurring media reports.

The deputy SPD chairman Kevin Kühnert is to succeed the incumbent general secretary Lars Klingbeil in office when he becomes the SPD leader. As reported by several media, among them the “Spiegel”, a top SPD group agreed on the personnel. The SPD itself did not initially confirm the news, but referred to the meetings of the presidium and board on Friday. According to the reports, the personnel will then be officially approved.

The 32-year-old former Juso chairman Kühnert has been SPD vice-president since the end of 2019. The post of general secretary becomes vacant because the previous incumbent Klingbeil applies for the party chairmanship. The previous party leader Norbert Walter-Borjans does not run again, while the co-chair Saskia Esken applies for another term. The personnel decisions will be made at a party congress on December 11th.
