Measles: Experts worry about increase in case numbers – Health

The highly contagious viruses are circulating again in many parts of the world, including Europe. The numbers in Germany are still low, but the trend is going in the wrong direction.

Sometimes only drastic words help: “Nobody should die from measles,” writes the director of the European Center for Prevention and Disease Control (ECDC), Andrea Ammon, in a current report on the spread of measles. In addition to Ammon, numerous experts are currently warning of a global flare-up of the potentially deadly pathogen. “It could be a perfect storm brewing,” said Natasha Crowcroft, head of the World Health Organization (WHO) measles program, during a meeting virtual press conference: “We are really worried.”
