“Maybe he’ll kill me”: Sarah Bora on domestic violence against women

Watch the video: “We need more protection for women and girls” – Sarah Bora on domestic violence against women.

Maybe he’ll kill me someday – or I’ll kill myself.

My name is Sarah Bora. I am a survivor of domestic violence.
I was physically and mentally abused for eight years.

At the age of 15 I had to experience physical violence in a relationship for the first time.
I’m frozen, let it go over me. Blackout!

When at some point I realize that his actions are not okay, I cannot leave the relationship. His reins are too tight, my fear of him too great.
The loneliness is the worst. I’m ashamed, don’t trust anyone anymore.
“Pull yourself together!” Or: “Everything will be fine, he didn’t mean it that way.” I hear way too often.

The older I get, the more I realize the two possible scenarios:
Either he’ll kill me someday – or I’ll do it myself.

My studies give me self-confidence. When it comes to a head, I decide I don’t want to live my life in constant fear anymore and run! Three years after the breakup he stalks me. But finally, I’m free!

I’m just one of hundreds of thousands. Every day in Germany a man attempts to murder a woman. Almost every three days a woman dies because her partner or ex-partner judges her life.

I want to be the voice of those who don’t have any anymore.

Domestic violence must be discussed without taboos.
I demand: more places in women’s shelters and more intensive educational work.

I demand: femicides must be scientifically documented and processed in order to be able to create preventive measures. The state must take tougher action when it comes to domestic violence.

We need more protection for women and girls.

Anyone who does not look consciously looks the other way irresponsibly.
