Maxhütte-Haidhof: Toxic fumes after fire in battery warehouse – Bavaria

An injured employee has to go to the hospital, and extinguishing the fire is difficult. “There have already been some explosions,” the police said.

A warehouse with batteries caught fire in the Upper Palatinate. An employee of the company in Maxhütte-Haidhof (Schwandorf district) came to the hospital on Thursday with burn injuries, a police spokesman said. Toxic fumes were emitted from the batteries. The fire brigade was in action with numerous forces.

The extinguishing work is expected to take several hours. These are difficult and dangerous because of the batteries, said the police spokesman. “There have already been some explosions.” The police recommended residents to stay indoors and close windows and doors.

As the Central Bavarian newspaper reported that the fire brigade decided in the evening to burn down the seat of the fire in a controlled manner, since it was not possible to extinguish it. Because an adjacent extinguishing pond was too dry, the fire brigade also had to fetch water from Regensburg.
