Marylise Léon at the head of the CFDT, allowed at 17 and Biden tackles Xi

Did you miss the news this early morning? We’ve put together a recap to help you see things more clearly.

The slogan of the CFDT could be this Wednesday: continuity in change. Number two since 2018, Marylise Léon will succeed Laurent Berger at the head of the first French union. At 46, she is the second woman to take the reins of the Confederation, after Nicole Notat, who led it from 1992 to 2002. According to the latest tallies, more than 45,700 new members have joined the CFDT since the month of January (for some 612,000 members at the end of 2022). A sign of its good health, the union has decided to mark this passing of the baton by offering itself all day this Wednesday at the Zénith de Paris, where 2,700 activists are expected. A peaceful succession which contrasts with that of Philippe Martinez at the CGT in March. Sophie Binet had indeed been elected while the management supported another candidacy.

The youth will have the honors of the executive this Wednesday. Driving from 17 years old from 2024, renovation of student accommodation, train pass… Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne will present several measures in favor of young people from a dedicated National Council for Refoundation, which had been broken down into five meetings. It will bring together for the occasion in Matignon some 400 young people and 15 ministers. This event will be followed in the fall by an “interministerial youth committee”.

While US Secretary of State Antony Blinken was in Beijing earlier this week to try to initiate a thaw, a word from Joe Biden on Tuesday risks reigniting the showdown. The American president indeed considered that his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping belonged to the category of “dictators” during a reception in California with donors from the Democratic Party, in the presence of journalists. Referring to a recent episode in which the United States destroyed a Chinese balloon which they said was spying on their territory, the tenant of the White House assured that “the reason why (the Chinese president) got so angry when I shot down this balloon full of spy equipment is that he did not know (that this device) was there”. “It’s very embarrassing for dictators when they don’t know what happened,” he continued. A statement that will not push for relaxation.
