Martin Hirsch is the new head of the State Coin Collection – Munich

“Through silver and gold coins in one hour from antiquity to the present and once around the world”: So describes Martin Hirsch the fascination of his workplace. The chief conservator has been head of the State Coin Collection in the Munich Residence since July 1st. He succeeds Friedrich Klose, who managed the house, whose collection dates back to Duke Albrecht V (1550-1579), for 13 years. Hirsch studied art history, philosophy and Bavarian church history at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität and did his doctorate in art history. He has been employed at the State Coin Collection since 2007 – initially as a research assistant. He was appointed curator in 2011 and deputy director in 2016. Hirsch is also a member of several art and cultural science specialist committees, co-editor of specialist books and journals and lecturer at the Institute for Art History at the LMU. Art Minister Markus Blume called him “a renowned and nationally and internationally networked expert in numismatics.
