Marseille definitely can’t do it anymore. With only one victory in 2024, OM sank again this Sunday evening against Brest (1-0) in the last minutes of the game. Yet in numerical superiority after the red card from Brestois Mounié (60th), OM almost never appeared dangerous in front of the opposing goal and conceded a late goal from Lees -Melou (89th). The Marseillais are still stalling and remain stuck in a sad 9th place while Brest becomes the new runner-up to PSG.
After a tight first half where both teams appeared threatening, Brest and Marseille returned to the locker room with a draw. A controversial refereeing decision could have awarded a penalty to Olympique de Marseille early in the match following a foul on Ndiaye, which was highlighted by the player on Prime Video at the break, affirming that there was “100 times fault” on the action. In the second half, as both teams looked to take the lead, Brest striker Steve Mounié was sent off for an elbow on Leonardo Balerdi in the 60th minute. Which should have been a turning point in the match.
However, despite this numerical superiority, Marseille did not succeed in finding the fault. The Brestois held on and finally took the advantage in the final moments thanks to an opportunity exploited by Pierre Lees-Melou, thus aggravating the Marseille crisis. This victory allows Brest to regain its place as runner-up to PSG, while Marseille slips to 9th place in the ranking, 6 points from first place in Europe.
