Marienplatz Munich: 79-year-old dies after falling on escalator – Munich

A 79-year-old woman from Munich fell down an escalator in the Marienplatz underground station on Saturday evening and suffered fatal injuries. The emergency services, who were immediately alerted, tried to revive the unconscious woman, but in vain. She died at the scene of the accident.

According to initial police investigations, the 79-year-old was pushed around 6:10 p.m. about halfway down the escalator leading down to the platform by a 29-year-old tourist from Great Britain when he missed a step and fell forward. The woman then also fell and swept away a 17-year-old who was in front of her. The young woman was taken to hospital with minor injuries; for the 79-year-old, any help came too late.

The suspect who caused the fall was not injured. Since he appeared to be clearly intoxicated, a blood test was ordered, which revealed a blood alcohol level of around 2.0. He was charged with negligent homicide and negligent bodily harm. After he had named an authorized recipient in Germany, he was released by the police.

The affected escalator area was closed for several hours while the accident was being recorded. The Munich traffic police are conducting further investigations.
