Marder delivery to the Ukraine: The logical consequence

The fact that the Federal Republic of Germany is now also supplying the Ukraine with Marder tanks is not surprising. How the decision was reached, however, is problematic.

A comment by Moritz Rödle, ARD capital studio

Germany supplies Marder armored personnel carriers. That’s the right decision. But it could have come much earlier.

I appreciate that the Chancellor always has in mind that Germany does not become a party to the war. But it is now clear that Ukraine can only hold its own in this war with even more Western weapons.

In the meantime, Germany has supplied Ukraine with military goods worth over 2.2 billion euros. So the Federal Republic is already doing a lot. But obviously not enough. Why didn’t Germany start training Ukrainian soldiers on the Marder months ago? In the logic of this war, the marten delivery can only be a further step, but not the last.

Macron’s push not good

In doing so, Europe must demonstrate unity. But that doesn’t work right now. French President Macron has rushed ahead with his announcement that he will deliver reconnaissance tanks himself. Apparently, this had been negotiated together for weeks. This is not good.

It reflects badly on both the French president’s ego and Franco-German relations. Not only as a Saarlander do I know that this is important for peace in Europe. So what’s stopping the chancellor from quickly repairing this relationship?
