Marburger Bund announces warning strikes at university hospitals

After the inconclusive third round of collective bargaining, the Marburger Bund called on doctors at university hospitals to go on a warning strike on January 30th. The doctors’ union warned of growing discontent.

Warning strikes are in sight in the collective bargaining dispute over the salaries and working conditions of 20,000 doctors in university hospitals: The Marburger Bund has called on its members to strike on January 30th. A central warning strike rally is to take place in Hanover.

A third round of negotiations had previously remained unsuccessful. The collective bargaining association of German states (TdL) is refusing to agree on fundamental improvements to the collective bargaining and working situation of doctors in university hospitals, the doctors’ union in Berlin announced.

“The states are leaving the doctors at university hospitals out in the cold,” said deputy union leader Andreas Botzlar. As an employer, the TdL “obviously needs a clear signal from those who are there for their seriously ill patients around the clock.”

Union warns of growing discontent

The TdL must recognize how great the need for action is to make medical services at university hospitals more attractive again. “Without substantial improvements, the dissatisfaction of doctors will become even greater,” explained Botzlar.

In the negotiations with the TdL, the Marburger Bund is demanding 12.5 percent more salary per year as well as higher supplements for regular work at night, on weekends and on public holidays. The Marburger Bund justified the requested linear increase with inflation and the goal of closing the salary gap with other hospital providers.

At some university hospitals, separate collective agreements apply for doctors. These include Berlin, Hamburg and Hesse. In-house collective agreements apply to the university hospitals in Dresden and Mainz. These are negotiated individually by the relevant regional associations of the Marburg Federation.
