Ethereum developers, node operators, and many users Disagree with Vitalik Buterin’s latest suggestion to increase Gas Limit on Ethereum.
On January 11, Buterin supported increasing the gas limit by 33%, which he said was a “modest” increase to improve network throughput.
Increasing the Gas Limit to 40 million from the current 30 million will allow for more transactions per block. This will theoretically increase the overall throughput and capacity of the network.
However, it does have some disadvantages, as Ethereum developer Marius van der Wijden noted in a January 11 blog post titled “Why Increasing Gas Limits Is Difficult.”
The main concern is to increase the size of the blockchain state, which consists of account balances and smart contract data.
The total space currently required is about 267 gigabytes (GB) just for state, he said, adding that “if we increase the Gas Limit, the size will expand even faster.”
