In the wake of the CJEU’s decision, the company A22 Sports, which now supports the Super League project, formalized a new formula for its competition via a press release sent to the media.
“The new proposal for this Superleague is the result of a fruitful dialogue that lasted two years with many football stakeholders including fans, players, clubs, leagues, policy makers and other experts,” explained A22 Sports. “The new Men’s Superleague is a system of leagues with 64 clubs divided into three levels. It is built in accordance with the football pyramid.”
And to specify the key elements of this new version:
● The first two leagues, the Star League and the Gold League, consist of 16 clubs each, while the third, the Blue League, comprises 32 clubs.
● Participation is based on sporting merit and there will be no permanent members.
● Ups and downs between the three leagues take place every season. Access to the Blue League will be based on the results obtained in the national championship.
● Clubs play home and away in groups of 8, giving a minimum of 14 matches per club each year.
● At the end of the season, a knockout stage will determine the champions of each league and the promoted clubs.
● There will be no more European days than those provided for in existing competitions. The matches will be played midweek and will have no impact on the national championship schedule.
● For the first year of the competition, clubs will be selected based on a set of transparent, performance-based criteria.
● Strict rules on Financial Fair Play and transparent application of these will be put in place to ensure a level playing field between clubs
participants.
