Manufacturer recalls e-bike: If you continue riding, you can risk the rag | Life & Knowledge

There are around 12 million e-bikes on the road in Germany, most of which are so-called Pedelecs. They support the driver with their electric motor when pedaling up to a speed of 25 km/h and therefore do not require a driving license.

If they are faster, this can have unpleasant legal consequences – up to and including the revocation of your driver’s license. And that’s exactly why the Bavaria-based manufacturer Cube is now recalling one of its newer e-bikes.

Some models are affected Cube Reaction Hybrid Rookie SLX 400 teamline 2023 27.5 (XS / 13.5″). There is a configuration error in the wheels of the e-bike, which costs around 2,500 euros, which does not directly endanger safety. But the determined wheel circumference deviates from the specified standards. The result: an impermissible excess of the maximum speed when automatically supported.

A driving license is required from 25 km/h

In Germany, bicycles with electric motors can only be used without a license and without a driving license if they support a speed of up to 25 km/h. Problem: On the affected Cube e-bikes, the support system registers a speed that is too low while driving. The system accelerates independently beyond the permitted 25 km/h.

Important: The affected bikes may not be used on public roads until the extent has been corrected! Cube clearly points out the possible consequences if you continue to use the bike like this. The rather small bikes are designed primarily for young riders. Depending on your age, this can lead to the loss of your driver’s license or the inability to apply for it. And in the event of an accident, there is a risk of significant legal problems.

Affected owners are asked to take their bikes to an authorized Cube dealer immediately. Here, the wheel circumference can be corrected in collaboration with the service department without having to send in the e-bike, according to the manufacturer.
