Manon Garcia: “It’s still considered normal for a woman to let things happen”

An EU legislative initiative proposes to define rape as “sexual intercourse without consent”. The French philosopher Manon Garcia explains why this is not an entirely good idea and why saying yes can mean something different for women than for men.

Ms Garcia, we must first talk briefly about Gérard Depardieu. More than 14 women have accused the actor of sexual aggression. Three women have filed rape charges against him. The case sparked a heated debate in France because Depardieu’s abuses had been known in the industry for decades. Even President Macron has spoken out, but above all praised Depardieu’s achievements and condemned the “manhunt” that was taking place in public. He found hardly any words for the alleged victims. What’s going on there?

I find that disastrous. Not just for reasons of content.

What do you mean?
