Man on trial for killing his grandmother with a chainsaw

A crime of incredible violence. A 27-year-old man accused of killing his 76-year-old grandmother with a chainsaw three years ago will appear for murder from this Monday before the Charente Assize Court.

The body of the septuagenarian, mutilated and partly charred, was discovered in May 2021 by a neighbor, lying under the lean-to of a henhouse near her house, in the village of Les Pins, northeast of Angoulême. Shortly after, the victim’s grandson was interviewed as a witness and then placed in police custody. He initially denied the facts then, confronted with evidence against him, he confessed.

Succession disputes

According to the investigation carried out by the gendarmes, the grandson had had poor relations with his grandmother since the death of his father in the mid-2010s. He had experienced the death and quarrels over the inheritance very badly. had polluted family relationships.

On the evening of the events, he was drunk and his lawyer, Mr. Rachid Rahmani, speaks of an “emotional surge”. The accused allegedly went to his grandmother’s house to damage her house and was surprised by the latter near the henhouse. “And there, he panics, with the alcohol, the adrenaline, there is something he cannot control,” says his lawyer.

Chainsaw in hand, which he had previously used to cut shutters, he struck his grandmother several times on the face and head. The significant blood loss led to a heart attack which led to death, according to the autopsy report. The grandson then tried to make the body disappear by burning it. He faces life imprisonment. The verdict is expected on May 14.
