Malinda Lo: “Like reading about homosexuality makes you homosexual” – Culture

Malinda Lo sits under a big old linden tree in Munich. The US novelist is here at the International Youth Library’s White Ravens Festival to present her young adult historical novel ‘Last Night at the Telegraph Club’. It is about a 17-year-old who feels like an outsider – because she is of Chinese descent, interested in space travel and is a lesbian. With a school friend, she begins exploring the queer clubs of San Francisco and meets her first love. The book won the National Book Award in the United States. But also removed from many US school libraries because conservative groups have criticized the depiction of the homosexual relationship.
