Maintained noise: the history of the percussion in the opera – Munich

In 1600, the Munich court orchestra hired its first timpanist, and it was not until 1925 that the Bavarian State Orchestra got its first percussionist. Composer Moritz Eggert tells the way there in “OPERcussion. The History of Percussion in Opera: 1700-2023”: Even in fast motion, at the premiere there is only cramming for a long time, then triangling and drumming. Since the introduction of stick games, however, the possibilities for more cultivated and unkempt noise have grown endlessly. The result is the children’s playground for adult men, which takes up the entire stage of the Cuvilliés Theater during the first Festival Chamber concert.
