On the cover of “V Magazine” Madonna poses as a Marilyn Monroe double. Fans find one of the pictures particularly insensitive.

It pays homage to one of the most legendary film icons of the 20th century: Madonna transformed into Marilyn Monroe for “V Magazine”. The blonde hair, the pout, the outfits – the resemblance between the Queen of Pop and Monroe is unmistakable. But one of the motifs in the magazine hits fans badly.

Madonna is criticized for Monroe pictures

Because Madonna apparently also recreated Monroe’s death. In one of the photos she is lying on a mattress, wrapped in fur, with a row of pill boxes clearly visible on the bedside table. The actress died of an overdose in 1962. She was found in her bed.

“For some morbid and sinister reason, Madonna decided to recreate Marilyn Monroe’s deathbed. The black and white photo is actually Marilyn Monroe’s bedroom where she died,” wrote entertainment and TV expert Mike Sington on Twitter.

“That’s not cool. The glorification of suicide is the only thing you take with you when the shock factor subsides,” agreed another reviewer. Others noted that Madonna had always been fascinated by Monroe.

Marilyn Monroe’s last photo shoot served as inspiration

The pictures are inspired by the last photo shoot that Monroe did during his lifetime. “We weren’t interested in exactly recreating the images, but rather wanted to investigate the relationship between the photographer and the subject. Both the friendship and the artistic process, and how art can imitate life and vice versa,” explained Steven Klein, who shot the pictures for “V Magazine” in a press release.

“When I sent the photos to Madonna, she was amazed by the fiery fragility of Marilyn at that moment in her life,” he said. “We decided to find a hotel suite and try to capture the liaison between a star and the camera, the mystery and magic of this creative collaboration.”
