Mad Foxes, the Nantes rockers who seduced Jimmy Fallon in the United States

The Mad Foxes trio, many from Nantes, a little from Angevin. – Mad Foxes / Y. Gérard

  • Mad Foxes is a post-punk group from Nantes and Angers.
  • The trio received praise from Jimmy Fallon, star presenter of the Tonigth show. A live was even broadcast.
  • The trio plan to tour France from September.

“I heard this group and loved it. He is fantastic “. The lyrics are signed by Jimmy Fallon, star presenter of the Tonight Show, one of the most watched shows on American television. They were spoken on NBC on May 8. “They come from France,” said Jimmy Fallon in addition to some laudatory comments and the broadcast of the
clip Crystal glass. This sequence, Lucas, Elie and Arnaud, the three rockers of
Mad Foxes, followed her live, a little incredulous. “We were up at 5am so as not to miss it. It’s lunar what happens to us. “

Based in Nantes and Angers, the group formed in 2016 had just released their second album, Ashamed, when the production of Tonight Show contacted them. “All this is a happy combination of circumstances, laughs Arnaud, the bass player. Thanks to a contact, our album is distributed by the
KEXP radio from Seattle. And it turns out that Jimmy Fallon listens to this radio, enjoyed it and searched for us on
Shazam. When we got the call to tell us that he wanted us to perform one of the songs, we said to ourselves that it was a hoax, it was not possible otherwise. We are a developing group, this type of show is normally inaccessible at our level. But we checked, it was good
NBC ! “

“We keep our heads on our shoulders”

The trio, aged 25, 27 and 28, therefore had to urgently choose a title (the heady Crystal glass) and record a clip. “We already had one, but the show asks the invited musicians for a specific video under live conditions. We went to shoot it in a gîte near Cholet, ”says Arnaud.

Thanks to this international spotlight (the Tonight Show is broadcast in several countries, including France), Mad Foxes suddenly saw its solicitations on social networks sharply increase. His compositions are listened to more online. And the number of views of his videos has exploded. “We sold a few vinyls in the United States,” says Arnaud. We are obviously delighted with all of this but we try to keep our heads on our shoulders. If this exhibition can help attract larger venues for our concerts, that would be great. “

“We can’t wait to get back on the road”

Coronavirus obliges, Lucas, Elie and Arnaud, who aim for the moment simply to “be able to live from this profession”, have only occurred once in public for a year. This period of calm allowed them to work on this second album. “The texts evoke fairly serious subjects which affect all three of us, such as the toxicity of a certain form of masculinity, the need to take a step back, depression, love… We feel a little out of step with a certain image of rockers, leather jacket, beer, perspiration… ”, admits the bassist.

How to describe their style? “Post-punk, with quite abrasive music and a song that is a little more chanted than sung. But we can also say grunge. »Their references? “Groups that are mostly British or American, like Queen of the Stone Age, All Them Witches, Idles, Shame or Fontaines DC ”

Impatient to “find the scene”, they hope to be able to begin in September a “tour in the Great West” and “perhaps even in all of France”. “Streaming is good, but we can’t wait to get back on the road, go back to concerts. We have accumulated a lot of frustration. “By then, some of their favorite spots will have reopened their doors, notably Le Ferrailleur, the Michelet Stage and the Café du cinema, in Nantes, or
the garage in Angers.
