One year before the presidential election, Emmanuel Macron is trying this Monday to regain control of a theme which, with the health crisis, should be at the heart of the campaign in 2022: security. This sovereign subject is erected as one of the priorities of the executive for the end of the five-year term while it remains identified as one of the President’s Achilles heels, especially facing the right. While he is preparing to make a trip to Montpellier on this subject on Monday, the Head of State promises in particular in an interview with the Figaro published Sunday evening to meet its objective of 10,000 additional police and gendarmes and to make the fight against drug trafficking “the mother of battles”.
The announcement of the creation of a European Super League of football creates a stir in the world of football, but not only. Emmanuel Macron thus stepped up to the plate by announcing on Sunday his opposition to the project and his support for the French clubs who refused to be part of it. For its part, the European Association of Clubs (ECA), of which all the top names in European football are members, declared, also on Sunday, to be “strongly opposed to a closed Super League model”, a competitor of the Champions League of UEFA. The controversy is therefore only beginning.
Alexeï Navalny’s state of health is worrying. With international pressure mounting on the Kremlin, Russia tried to reassure its intentions on Sunday. Moscow will not let the opponent “die in prison”, assured the Russian ambassador to London in an interview with the BBC. Ambassador Andreï Kéline, however, blames the current state of affairs on the main critic of the Kremlin. “Of course we won’t let him die in jail, but I can tell Mr. Navalny is behaving like a hooligan […] by trying to break every rule that has been established, ”he said. EU foreign ministers are due to meet on Monday on the issue.
