Chiara Mastroianni and Catherine Deneuve reunited in honor of Marcello

Today’s event: the Olympic flame ascends the steps

The Olympic flame was treated to its climb up the steps, carried by a cast of high-level athletes who had ditched their jogging for a gala outfit.

And it’s obviously on the music of the film Chariots of fire by Vangelis in 1981, a theme used as background music for most medal ceremonies, as the athletes appeared cheered by the crowd and the crackle of flashes.

Four athletes who distinguished themselves in Paralympic disciplines had the honor of carrying the torch. Arnaud Assoumani, Paralympic long jump champion in 2008 in Beijing, started the climb. He was relayed by Alexis Hanquinquant, gold in paratriathlon in Tokyo in 2021, Nélia Barbosa, Paralympic vice-champion in kayaking in Japan, and Marie Patouillet, double bronze medalist in para-cycling in 2021.

Sentence of the day:

Our joy will be that of all festival-goers and all freedom-loving Iranians. »

The general delegate of the Cannes Film Festival confirmed the presence on the Croisette of Iranian director Mohammad Rasoulof, who had to flee his country in incredible conditions after being sentenced to prison. He comes to present in competition Wild fig tree seeds.

Film of the day: “Marcello mio” by Christophe Honoré

Chiara Mastroianni dresses like her father at Fellini and calls himself Marcello: here is Marcello mio, a crazy comedy presented at the Cannes Film Festival where Catherine Deneuve, and other stars, play themselves. Fabrice Luchini, Nicole Garcia, Benjamin Biolay and Melvil Poupaud (the latter shared the life of the main actress) complete the cast of the new film by Frenchman Christophe Honoré, which follows the joyful lurch of this fictional Chiara Mastroianni between Paris and Italy. This feature film is released tomorrow in French cinemas.
