Macron in Corsica, anti-school harassment plan and Trump’s legal troubles

Did you miss the news this morning? We have put together a summary to help you see things more clearly.

The executive succeeds one another in Corsica. After Gérald Darmanin in mid-September, Emmanuel Macron is in turn expected on site this Wednesday for a two-day visit. He could notably take the opportunity to make announcements on the status of the island. The president will begin his visit with a “republican dinner” with local elected officials in Ajaccio, before a highly anticipated speech Thursday morning at the Corsican Assembly.

After the death in March 2022 of Yvan Colonna, attacked in Arles prison where he was serving a life sentence for the assassination of prefect Erignac, and the violent demonstrations which followed on the island, the government opened discussions that could “go as far as autonomy”. The presidential speech will therefore punctuate several months of these exchanges.

It is a file considered by the executive as an “absolute priority”. During a press conference at 4:30 p.m., Elisabeth Borne will present the interministerial plan to combat school bullying. Among the range of measures that the Prime Minister will announce, should include the development of empathy courses in nursery and elementary schools. Gabriel Attal, the Minister of Education, was indeed in favor of it.

Launched in the race to reconquer the White House in 2024, this is another major setback for Donald Trump. A New York judge on Tuesday found the former president and two of his children responsible for lies and “repeated” financial “fraud” in the 2010s by inflating the assets of the Trump Organization.

This decision, even before the civil trial in this case opened on Monday, facilitates the task of the Attorney General of the State of New York, who had filed a complaint against Donald Trump. She is demanding $250 million in fines and bans from running companies for the former head of state and several of his close associates.
